Who can apply for a laissez-passer?

The Immigration Service only issues laissez-passer to a very limited extent and your application has to show cause. We do not issue laissez-passer for vacation trips.

You can be granted a laissez-passer if you have a residence permit in Denmark and wish to travel out of the country, but do not hold any other valid travel documentation.

For instance, it may be that you have to travel out of the country in order to apply for a new passport from the authorities in your home country.

What are the requirements?

You must be aware of the following:

  • In your application, you have to state the specific reason for why you need a laissez-passer.
  • We do not issue laissez-passer if you already hold a valid passport that allows you to travel.
  • We only issue the laissez-passer if your home country does not have an embassy or representation in Denmark, or if your home country’s embassy or representation is unable to issue travel documentation for you.
  • If you are issued a laissez-passer in order to travel out of the country and apply for a new passport from the authorities in your home country, we expect you to be issued a new passport from your home country during the timespan in which your laissez-passer is valid.
  • Generally, we do not issue laissez-passer with a validity that goes beyond 5 days in countries inside Europe and 30 days outside of Europe.

What does a laissez-passer cost?

The price for a laissez-passer depends on your age. A laissez-passer costs DKK 320 (2024 level), if you are 18 years or older. If you are younger than 18 years it costs DKK 160 (2024 level).

You must pay the fee when you show up at the Citizen Service to pick up your laissez-passer.

Normally you always have to pay a fee for a laissez-passer, unless Denmark’s international obligations or EU rules contradicts it.
