Verification at the Immigration Service
The Danish Immigration Service is obligated to effectively and determinedly identify and manage security risks, misuse and non-compliance of rules.
The checks include foreign nationals who are applying for entry or residence in Denmark, or who are already visiting or staying in Denmark within the rules administrated by the Immigration Service.
In general, the control measures can be divided in three categories:
Before the application
The Immigration Service provides guidance on rules for entry and residence as well as the conducted checks.
During the processing of the case
During the process of e.g. an application for asylum or family reunification, the Immigration Service verifies the information in order to ensure, that the residence permit is being granted to foreign nationals who have a right to it and rejected to foreign nationals who have not.
The checks vary depending on the type of case and can include e.g. verification of documents in order to determine foreign nationals’ identities, DNA test in order to determine family affairs, age test and verification of information in different public registers.
After the decision
The Immigration Service also checks if foreign nationals comply with the conditions in effect for their residence permit. That is the requirements that need to be met in order to keep the right to stay in Denmark, e.g. that the reunified family members live together.
The Immigration Service can revoke the residence permit, if the conditions are not met.
Furthermore, the Immigration Service checks whether there are foreign nationals who are staying in Denmark illegally, e.g. if a foreign national has lost the right to stay in the country.
Comparison of registries is an automatic comparison of information from the Civil Registration System (CPR), the Buildings and Housing Registry (BRB) and the Danish Income Register (eIndkomst) with the Immigration Service’s information. That is one of the Immigration Service’s means to ensure an effective and systematic verification.
