You can be granted a residence permit to follow a higher educational programme (a complete programme or as a guest- or exchange student), a PhD programme (a complete programme or as a guest), a course at a folk high school or 1 year of a basic or youth study programme.

In order to be granted a residence permit, you must be admitted to a publicly accredited educational institution.

You cannot be granted a permit to study at a private educational institution.

You cannot be granted a permit to follow a private educational programme (e.g. to train as a pilot)

In addition, it is required that the educational programme itself must be approved by a state authority, or that the Danish Evaluation Institute has assessed that a residence permit can be granted to students who will be studying at the educational programme in Denmark.
