Information for Afghan Citizens in Denmark
As of September 18, 2024, Denmark no longer recognizes extended Afghan national passports. This means that Afghan citizens with this type of passport must contact the Afghan authorities to obtain a new national passport. Below, you can read about some of the options available to Afghan citizens in Denmark for obtaining a convention or alien’s passport from the Danish Immigration Service.
If you are an Afghan citizen with a residence permit on another ground than asylum – e.g. as being a family reunited spouse or as an employee, you are not entitled to get an alien’s passport from the Immigration Service, just because of your residence permit. In such cases, you can only get an alien’s passport if you can document that you are unable to get an Afghan national passport. If obtaining an Afghan national passport requires you to travel back to Afghanistan, we will generally refer you to do so.
If you need to apply for an extension of your residence permit, e.g. on the grounds of family reunification, and your Afghan national passport has expired in the meantime, the same terms apply as described above. When we process an application for an alien’s passport or an application for an extension of a residence permit, we cannot take legal conditions regarding asylum into consideration if you have a residence permit in Denmark on grounds other than asylum.
If you believe that you cannot return to Afghanistan due to legal conditions regarding asylum, you can apply for asylum.
