The EU scheme in the Faroe Islands

As the Faroe Islands is not a member state of the EU, the EU rules do not apply to the Faroe Islands.

However, when the rate of unemployment in the Faroe Islands is low, EU citizens can apply for a residence permit through the special EU Scheme.

The scheme does not apply to citizens of Switzerland and EEA citizens (i.e. citizens of Island, Liechtenstein and Norway).

Faroese employers can be pre-approved in order to receive a more flexible application process regarding work and residence permits on the basis of employment of citizens from the EU countries.

What are the advantages of pre-approval?

If a EU citizen has agreed to a full time employment with a pre-approved Faroese employer, then the employment can be notified to SIRI through a specific application form. If the application fullfills the conditions for a residence permit, then the EU citizen can start the job immidiately after the notification of SIRI.

SIRI will subsequently process the application and our response will be sent to the applicant - with a copy to the Faroese employer.

What are the conditions in order to be pre-approved?

To qualify for pre-approved, the employer has to be

  • based on the Faroe Islands, and
  • a party to a Faroese collective bargaining agreement, and
  • registered with the faroese TAX authority, TAKS, as liable to pay VAT according to the Faroese tax legislation

Duration of pre-approval

Pre-approval is given for one year, from the day of decision.

Application for pre-approval

Application for pre-approval is processed by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI).

In order to apply, the Faroese employer has to utilize the application form FO/AR7. You will find this form in the column to the right, 'How to apply'. This form is used both for first time application and for extension of pre-approval. It is not possible to apply online.

The application can be submitted by letter, by email, or handed in to the police.

If you have given a third party proxy to handle the application, make sure to include the proxy in the application package.
