Test in Danish for family reunified spouses
If you are granted residence permit in Denmark on the grounds of family reunification with spouses, you will normally be required to pass firstly a test in Danish at the A1 level or higher and afterward a test in Danish at A2 level or higher. If you have applied for family reunification of spouses before 1 July 2018, it is however not a requirement that you pass a test in Danish at level A2.
Test in Danish at A1 level (danskprøve på A1-niveau)
The immigration authorities offer a language test in Danish at the A1 level.
The language test in Danish at A1 level is an oral test. Therefore, you will not be writing during the test, but only listen and orally answer the questions you are asked. The test is in Danish, and you must answer in Danish.
It is a condition for you to continue to stay in Denmark that you pass the test in Danish at A1 level.
Certain other tests that are offered by the immigration authorities can be taken instead of the test in Danish at A1 level. See the list of approved alternative test in Danish at A1 level (in Danish only)
If you have passed one of these tests you must submit proper documentation to the Immigration Service. You must submit the documentation within the deadline for passing the test in Danish at A1 level. Read more about the deadline for passing the test in Danish
Module test administered to students taking Danish classes for new adult residents (Danskuddannelserne for nyankomne voksne udlændinge m.fl.) is not an approved alternative to the test in Danish at A1 level.
Test in Danish at A2-level (danskprøve på A2-niveau)
The immigration authorities offer a test in Danish as second language at the A2 level.
The language test in Danish at A2 level is an oral test. Therefore, you will not be writing during the test, but only listen and orally answer the questions you are asked. The test is in Danish, and you must answer in Danish.
It is a condition for you to continue to stay in Denmark that you pass the test in Danish at A1 level.

Reduction of the collateral guarantee
When you meet the requirement of passing the tests in Danish at A1 level and A2 level, you have the option of having the amount of collateral provided by your spouse/partner in Denmark reduced.

Registration
You can register to take the language tests in Danish at A1 level or A2 level offered by the immigration authorities at danskprøve.dk.
The tests in Danish at A1 level and A2 level are oral examinations and are held at VSKdansk in Glostrup and at Sprogcenter Vejle.
The registration fee for tests in Danish at A1 level and A2 level is DKK 3,025.43 (2024 level) per test.
If you are an EU citizen or if your spouse/partner is a Turkish citizen who is economically active, you are exempt from paying the registration fee.
In order for you to register to take the tests in Danish at A1 level and A2 level, you must have a CPR number or a personal ID. If you do not have a CPR number or a personal ID, please contact the Immigration Service by email: danskproven@us.dk. In that situation, you can be issued a personal ID, so you can register to take the tests in Danish at A1 level or A2 level.
