Can I apply for a sideline employment permit?

If you already hold a residence permit based on work in Greenland, you can apply for a sideline employment permit.

A sideline employment permit is granted on the basis of an individual assessment.

The application procedure is the same, but the conditions are not the same, e.g. it is not in all cases that we send your application to the Government of Greenland for approval.

What are the conditions?

Your sideline job must be naturally related to your main job

It is condition that your sideline job must be naturally related to the job that your residence permit in Greenland is based on. For example, this could be the musician who wishes to take sideline employment as an instructor at a music school.

You must have a specific job offer

In order to be granted a sideline employment permit, you must attach a specific job offer to your application.

The salary and terms of employment must correspond to Greenlandic standards.

Your employment must be between 8 and 15 hours of work per week

Normally, you can only be granted a permit for sideline employments that involve between 8 and 15 hours of work per week.

How long can I have my sideline job?

Your sideline employment permit can be granted for a period equal to the period of your main job. However, the period cannot exceed the duration of your sideline job contract.

Can my sideline employment permit be extended?

You can extend your sideline employment permit if you still hold the same job and if you still meet the conditions of your permit for your main job.

You and your employer are each required to complete a part of the form.

In this step you and your employer have access to the relevant application form GL1.

Make sure that you have completed all the preceeding steps before you begin.

All our application forms contain careful instructions on how to complete the form and what kind of documents you must submit along with the form.

In the printable application form GL1 your employer must complete part 2 of the form. When your employer has completed his or her part, you must complete your part. Once parts 1 and 2 have been completed, they must be submitted together – read more in the next step.

You must submit the necessary documents with the application.

Gather documentation

It is a good idea to gather the necessary documents before you start to complete the application form. You can use the check list below.

If you submit documents not written in English, German, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, you must also submit certified translations into Danish or English

You must submit

Copy of all pages of your passport – including all empty pages and the passport’s front and back cover.

Copy of employment contract stating your salary and terms of employment, as well as a job description. The employment contract must not more than 30 days old.

Proof of authorisation to work in your field (if the job requires a Danish or a Greenlandic authorization).

Your employer must submit

Permission to employ foreign labour in the job position - according to Landstingslov no. 27 of 30. October 1992 concerning the regulation of labour force increase in Greenland.

Receive an answer

SIRI will contact you or your employer if we need further information to process your case.

Your residence card will automatically be sent to the address that has been registered under your name in the Civil Registration System (CPR). It is important that your name is written on your mailbox. If your name is not written on your mailbox, there is a chance that the residence card will not be delivered to you, and that it will be sent back to SIRI instead.
