Test in Danish at A1-level (Danskprøve A1)

The immigration authorities offer a test in Danish at the A1 level (Danskprøve A1). Certain other tests can be taken instead of the Danskprøve A1 offered by the immigration authorities. See the list of approved alternative test in Danish at A1-level (in Danish only)

Module test administered to students taking Danish classes for new adult residents (Danskuddannelserne for nyankomne voksne udlændinge m.fl.) is not an approved alternative to the Danskprøve A1.

It is a requirement for your continuous permit to stay in Denmark that you have passed a test in Danish at the A1 level or higher.

Normally, you must pass the test in Danish at the A1 level within 6 months of being granted a residence permit in Denmark. Read more about the deadline for passing the test in Danish

You must submit documentation for passed tests to the Immigration Service prior to the deadline for passing the test. 

Once you pass the test in Danish at the A1 level, you obtain the right to stay in Denmark and the amount of collateral required to be posted by your spouse/partner will be reduced by DKK 22,058.78 (2023 level). If you have applied for family reunification as a spouse before 1 July 2018, the amount of collateral can be reduced by DKK 23.044,97 (2020 level). In order to have the amount of collateral reduced, you will need to contact your municipality.

Test in Danish at A2-level (Danskprøve A2)

The immigration authorities offer a test in Danish as second language at the A2 level (Danskprøve A2).

Certain other tests can be taken in lieu of the test in Danish at A2 level offered by the immigration authorities. See the full list of approved alternative tests in Danish at A2-level (in Danish only)

If you have passed one of these tests you will be required to submit proper documentation to the Immigration Service prior to the deadline for passing the A2 level test in Danish. Read more about the deadlines for the Danish language tests

You must submit documentation for passed tests to the Immigration Service prior to the deadline for passing the test. 

Once you pass the test in Danish at the A2 level, you obtain the right to stay in Denmark and the amount of collateral required to be posted by your spouse/partner will be reduced by [dynamic:oko_sikkerhed_neds2_v2].

If you have applied for family reunification as a spouse before 1 July 2018, a passed Danish language test level A2 is not a requirement for your continuous permit to stay in Denmark, but a passed Danish language test level A2 provides for the possibility of having the amount of collateral reduced by [dynamic:Oko_sikk_nedsattelse2_9_32].  

In order to have the amount of collateral reduced, you will need to contact your municipality.

Registration

You can register to take the test Danskprøve A1 or Danskprøve A2 offered by the immigration authorities at danskprøve.dk.

The Danskprøve A1 and A2 are oral examinations and are held at Vestegnens Sprog- og Kompetencecenter in Glostrup or at Sprogcenter Vejle.

In order to take the test A1 and/or A2, you must pay a registration fee of DKK 2,931.62 (2023 level) per test.

If you are an EU citizen or if your spouse/partner is a Turkish citizen who is economically active, you are exempt from paying the registration fee.

In order for you to register to take the test Danskprøve A1 or A2, you must either have a CPR number or a personal ID. If you do not have a CPR number or a personal ID, please contact the Immigration Service by email: danskproven@us.dk. In that situation, you can be issued a personal ID, so you can register to take the test Danskprøve A1 or A2.
