New rules for entry into Denmark starting 21 April 2021

From 21 April 2021 new rules apply, meaning that all countries will be divided into the colour categories yellow, orange or red in relation to entry into Denmark.

After this point, entry into Denmark, regardless of purpose, can be granted to persons entering from countries in the yellow and orange categories and who have been granted a residence permit or right to residence under the Danish Aliens Act.

Under the new rules it will generally be impossible to enter Denmark from a country in the red category, that is a country which the healty autorities believe pose a particular Covid-19 risk. The new rules apply to all foreign nationals outside Denmark who are not a legal resident of Denmark, and who have been granted a residence permit or right to residence under the Danish Aliens Act or related regulations.

As a result of the new rules, entry into Denmark from a red country will only be possible for individuals with a worthy purpose, primarily if:

  • The foreign national is to function as a primary caregiver to a minor child
  • The foreign national is to visit a close relative who is seriously ill or dying
  • The foreign national is to transport goods to or through Denmark

The new rules once again enable persons who have been granted a residence permit as a student, intern or au pair to enter into Denmark, except if they wish to enter from a country in the red category.

A list of the red countries can be found in the regulation.

The regulation is valid until 19 May 2021.
